Supporting your Child

WAYS YOU CAN HELP SUPPORT YOUR CHILD’S MUSICAL DEVELOPMENT

Supporting and engaging with your child is one of the key ingredients in helping them develop musically. Even if you are not musical yourself, just spending a few minutes sitting and listening to them play is just one way in which you can support them. Here are a few ways to help encourage your child.

  • Find a suitable place in your home for your child to practise, preferably somewhere quiet where they will not be interrupted or distracted.

  • Encourage your child to practise at the same time each day so they can establish a daily routine.

  • Spend time talking with your child about what they are learning. Ask them questions about a piece. What is it they like about the music? What do they imagine as they play it? What do you imagine as you hear it? Find out more about the composer and listen to some of their work - you never know what you may discover!

  • Hold an informal concert in your home for friends and family to help your child with gain confidence with playing in front of an audience.

  • Make music a part of your home. Sing together around the house, in the car or while you are cooking and cleaning. It doesn’t matter how you sound or how good your are!
