The Benefits of Singing

WHY SINGING IS GOOD FOR THE BODY AND SOUL

Being able to use our voice to communicate through song is something that we are all born to do. We can all sing.

Singing is a natural way of communicating to others by expressing our feelings, thoughts and emotions. Some of us may think (or have been told) that we “cannot sing”, “hold a tune” or are “tone deaf”. Unless there is some medical condition with your hearing, this is not true! The first step is having the confidence to find our voice. There are many ways we can do this and a good starting point is to join an amateur choir or an informal singing group. This is not only a great way of finding and developing the voice, but also a fun way of making music with other people, who probably felt like you did early on too.

Research shows that singing together is not only good for our brains but can help improve our health and well-being. Here are a few ways that singing can benefit you:

  • Singing improves breathing, posture and muscle tension

  • Studies have shown that singing improves memory and mental alertness

  • Can decrease stress levels, anxiety and depression

  • Helps to boost self-esteem

  • Singing can broaden communication skills
